Dictionaries for Guatemala
The Rotary eClub of the State of Jefferson put a new twist on this year’s Dictionary Project by voting to provide dictionaries to third-graders in a remote region of northwestern Guatemala. It is a country with the highest illiteracy rate in all of Central and South America where only 30% of children graduate from primary school, these dictionaries will be a valuable tool to improving those numbers. Rotarian Osman Castaneda, a member of our club, has initiated a new community service Reading Program for kids living in nearby villages. Teaching how to use a dictionary is part of his plan. Once he’s found Spanish story books and vocabulary games, he can kick off this project. For more info visit the Adopt a Village Website.
