Tandi Reading Club (Tent 2)

Tandi 01A

The second Children Tent

It was for a total of 30 children including one who attended the first. She is the one without a t-shirt and she was here because she had to help with the children crossing of the two roads leading to the venue.

Tandi Reading Tent was held on 6th July 2024

This was a group of children from different primary schools around Kamwokya in Kampala, Uganda.

This time they were from six schools.

Activities were held and the children were so excited when they saw the books that had been carried for them to read. They told us that they had never seen such beautiful books. We got these books from Room to Read through the Reading Association of Uganda and we are mandated to use them in a bid to promote the reading culture.

The children arrived at 10:30 am East African time at the planned venue. (Children’s Park in Kamwokya). The rain season is sampling us but we were luck on that day.

It was the usual agenda for the day and it was read to everyone.

  1. Prayer

One of the children volunteered to pray.

  1. Introductions (Name, Class and School)

We had Individual introductions. Our usual question was also not left out for them to answer

“Why reading is beneficial to us.”

This gives the children the genesis of why reading and also attending reading activities is beneficial to them.

  1. Read Aloud

4. A story of a fly went by written by Mike Flintlock was read to the children

Why this story again!

It was the same book read because we tried to change but the children insisted on the same. They told us that their siblings and friends narrated to them the story and they wanted to listen to it being read. We therefore, had to read the story of “The Fly went by.”

During my free time, I decided to find out why this story was of so much interest to the children. For those that have never read the story, it is about all animals are running but don’t know why they are running.

My analysis:

  • Most children like sports and running is one of its components.
  • Most children love animals.
  • Most children are adventurous.
  • Selection of the characters is perfect for the children
  • The narrator is a child

I would like to thank the author of this book.

At the end of the story, the children had empathetic stories to share.

They enjoyed the running and realized the characters did not give time to listening and understanding the situation.

The lesson picked was that always give yourself time before you make decisions.

The children enjoyed it very much.

  1. Spelling competitions

This is usually the most wanted session but so nerve breaking. Ms. Robinah, a teacher at one of the schools that participated and a member of the club, conducted it. She is in charge of the spelling bee session.

  1. Independent Reading

2024 07 Tandi 10

We cannot end the day without independent reading. This when you see those that cannot read at a certain level are busy reading the pictures. There are some children that make different stories using the pictures in the same book. It is amazing to see the readers enjoying the story through pictures. Most of these books are curriculum support and they help children identify with what has just been taught in the classroom. (It becomes vivid).

Thank you so much State of Jefferson Rotary Club for your support. All these would not have been possible without you.

  1. We re-wrote and re-told stories. The children drew and colored pictures derived from their independent reading.

Ms. Annette with the winners of the spelling activity from their various classes.

We asked the children to listen to audios from the members of the Jefferson State and record replies to them. These will be posted.

It goes without saying that the last day’s activity was snacking The Reading Tent was concluded at around 3:00 p.m. and cleaning of the place ensued.

We were excited to listen to the children when they asked if these reading tents could be held every Saturday.

We would like to thank the State of Jefferson Rotary Club for funding our tent again.
