Navajo Solar Lights Update
April 8, 2020
The COVID19 crisis continues to increase its number of victims in the Navajo Nation. The Navajo Nation President, Jonathon Nez, has issued strict stay-at-home and curfew orders. In addition, the Navajo Nation remains closed to non-Navajo. There is no indication when these orders will be rescinded, but the number of positive cases and deaths continues to climb every day.
The State of New Mexico remains under a stay-at-home order as well, an order that was extended through April 30, 2020.
It is looking increasingly unlikely that we will proceed with the June installation, but a final decision on that will be made next week.
The Navajo Monster Slayer Twins
When the Spirit People came upon this earth from below, they made six sacred mountains, four on the distant horizon at the cardinal points and two in the center. In these mountains was born Yikaistsjn or White-Shell Woman.
Two of the most important characters in Navajo mythology are twin miracle-performing sons of White-Shell Woman. First born of the twins was Naayee’neizghani or Slayer of Monsters. His brother was Tobajishchini or Born for Water.
Together, the twins killed numerous bird, animal, rock, and human monsters, typifying evil, who were destroying human life.
