Literacy Libraries and Child Reading Tents

Some children believe or have been told that they cannot be creative.

The eClub State of Jefferson is working on a unique literacy project in Uganda. For a very small investment, we can have a big impact on children’s lives.

The project is in two parts:
1. Reading Tents and
2. Supporting School Libraries.

The eClub Foundation is applying for a literacy grant of $500.00 to fund a portion of the total cost of $2,500.00. If you would like to help support this project please make a tax-free donation to the eClub Foundation and designate the Uganda Literacy Project. Thank you!

1. Reading Tents

“Through these reading tents, the children will benefit in different ways. For example, these will boost their confidence, more understanding, and application of generic skills that are very essential in this century.”

Concept Note for Children Reading Tents

Organizers: Tandi Reading Club
Project Title: Children’s Reading Tents
Project Aim: To support Children aged 5 – 17 years improve on their reading culture.
Project Location: Urban and Rural Uganda
Opportunities to be addressed:

1. Support children on how to decide or determine what to read
2. Give them ways on understanding what they read.
3. Applying what they read to their environment

Problem Analysis and Evidence:

Education empowers and improves skills such as literacy, numeracy, and cognitive ability. According to UWEZO Report, 2021 about the levels of literacy in the primary schools. The proportion of children fully competent in English reading for the whole set of grades P3-7, rose from 32.5% in 2018 to 39.5% in 2021, but the proportion of ‘non-readers’ increased.
Challenges are more with the accessing the reading materials, time to read them, understanding, and application.

Concept Focus

Through these reading tents, the children will benefit in different ways. For example, these will boost their confidence, more understanding, and application of generic skills that are very essential in this century.

Strategy:

Hear; Reading to these children will make them calm and boost their ability to listen to themselves and others.

Hand; Support the children in being practical and guide them on how their hands and legs can be more useful.

Head; Some children believe or have been told that they cannot be creative. Most of these are cultural.

Scope of work and expected deliverables.

  1. Content Preparation
  2. Coaching and Mentorship of the children
  3. Conduct coaching and mentorship sessions with them.
  4. Conduct feedback sessions with the children after every session.
  5. Support Personal Growth

2. Supporting School Libraries

“To support Teacher Librarians, attain effective ways of conducting a library lesson from primary one up senior two. These will nurture the reading culture.”

Concept for Supporting School Libraries

Consultants: Tandi Reading Club
Project Title: Basic School Library Lesson
Project Aim: To support Teacher Librarians, attain effective ways of conducting a library lesson from primary one up senior two. These will nurture the reading culture
Project Location: Urban and Rural Uganda

Opportunities to be addressed:

1. Support teachers on effective ways of delivering literacy lessons
2. Improve on the activities’ that nurture the reading culture
3. Design modules that support this lesson
Problem Analysis and Evidence:

There is a library lesson scheduled for all classes as designed by the National Curriculum Development Centre of Uganda. This lesson is on all timetables in schools but most teacher librarians’ lack the knowledge of what happens during this lesson.

Concept Focus

Through the CPD (Continuous Professional Development), the teacher librarians will be equipped with the requisite skills to effectively navigate areas of improvement.

The teacher librarians will be able to find their SWOT (Strength, weakness, Threats and Opportunities). This supports teachers to “scope’ the actual area of intervention.

1.2 Design appropriate assessment of the children’s level of reading.

1.3 Choosing and Sorting out reading materials for various levels. (In terms of print etc.)

1.5 Show casing the teachers’ achievements (sharing of successes and addressing challenges.

Strategy:

  • Frequent trainings
    • Budding between teacher librarians
    • Introduction of debating clubs

Scope of work and expected deliverables.

Observing of the library lesson:

  1. Content Preparation
  2. Coaching and Mentorship Session Delivery
  3. Conduct coaching and mentorship sessions with them.
  4. Support the teachers to design action plans on the changes they intend to make in their teaching methods, attitudes to help the children acquire literacy skills
  5. Field Visits
  6. Conduct feedback sessions with the teachers every after a field visit and give them assessment reports.
  7. Support Personal Growth
