Overwhelmed by Digital Clutter? Take a Deep Breath and Delete Those Tabs, Files

All of things taking up space on your devices can take over your mind. But there's help to be found.

Clutter can take up more than space in your home; its presence can weigh on your mind. And that goes for clutter that’s purely digital as well. All those apps you don’t use, random photos that take up space on your phone, and those tabs you’re almost emotionally attached to, you’d probably be better off if you discarded them.

Secure Data Recovery took a look around at digital clutter by surveying almost 2,000 people in the US. It found that for one out of every three people, their digital space is messier than their homes. For 73% of those surveyed, digital clutter bothers them as much as physical clutter.

On their PCs, people are most plagued by old files they need to delete (76%), multiple open tabs and windows (75%), software that’s not updated (52%), cluttered desktops (48%), and full recycle bins (47%).

These problems are worse in some states more than others. Overall Michigan, Utah, and Connecticut have the most clutter while Arizona, North Carolina, and West Virginia have the least.

Phones are far from free of this issue, with people feeling overwhelmed by unused apps (80%), screenshots they don’t need (73%), unwanted notifications they don’t turn off (64%), too many photos (54%), and too many browser tabs open (40%).

While devices can present as totally sleek and together while they’re crammed with such clutter, there are plenty of times where their outside state can hint at chaos within: cracked screens, dust, dirt, and more.

But before you despair, PCMag has you covered. We have a guide to using the famed KonMari method to clear out all that’s cluttering up your devices inside and everything you need to know about how to physically clean them as well.
