The Rotary eClub of the State of Jefferson (SOJ) comes through again for kids in urban Guatemala. This time, with the help of Beyond the App, the American University in Cairo, and State University of New York, Cortland, we were able to deliver enough books for every first and second grader at La Escuela Unidos por La Paz in Villa Nueva, an urban area just outside of Guatemala City. Right now, the schools cannot be open except to pick up homework, meet with the teacher, and then go home. As you can imagine, the internet is not a thing in this barrio for most kids let alone an iPad. We just gave a little hope to a few children who just want to read.
I’m now working on doing something similar in Egypt, a community called Assiut, and we hope to do Beyond the App again next fall to generate more $$ for the project. Thanks to SOJ for helping with the logistics of getting the funds converted to books and put in kids’ hands!
