and an opportunity to remain connected with Rotary!

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
Good day Rotary Friends! Thank you for joining us today for this week's eClub State of Jefferson Weekly Meeting.
This is my last post as President of the E-Club, my term ends at the end of this month, and I will be back on the road again this coming weekend. Bob Gibson will take over as President for the last quarter of this fiscal year. I will continue to act as Secretary for the club, and Carol Fellows has volunteered to be my assistant.
Earlier this week the State of Jefferson Rotary E-Club Board met for their March 2022 meeting, and during this meeting Bob Gibson reported that the Annual Giving to the Rotary Foundation was up to $6,694.50, and the Polio Eradication was up to $2,845.00. In all the confusion at the first of the Rotary year, our annual goals were never sent into Rotary International or to District 5110, but if they would have been sent, I believe we would have surpassed them in your donations. Thank you all for your donations!
It was also reported that the Uganda Water Project that our club participated in by sending $300 to help out with this project was a huge success. They are now providing potable water to the hundreds of people in the area. Hopefully Bruce will be able to post the pictures and details of this project on a weekly meeting.
After many months of meetings, the Nominating Committee reported that they finally came up with the following nominations: PE: Bob Gibson, Past President: John Allman, Vice President: Mitch Allen, Secretary: Jean Hamilton, Treasurer: Carol Ruggeri, as acting Directors: John Cox, Geoffrey James, and Lucinda Kolo. All nominees were approved by the board. Thank you all for volunteering your services.
So, this is it for my short term as president. It started out to be fairly an easy job once I got Wi-Fi internet, and then towards the end I had a few bumps to deal with, but with the support of everyone on the board, I made it through with just a few bruises. Thank you, Bob Gibson, Jean Hamilton, Bruce Garrett, Carrol Ruggeri, John Allman, Geoffrey James, and Greg Brown for all your help and support these past three months. You are the best! Thank you, Carrol Fellows for stepping in and helping out with the minutes from past and for the next three months. I really appreciate all of you! I will do my best to keep in touch. Just so you know, I will have my phone with me 24/7 if you need any help, Internet will be intermittent, but I will do my best to stay in touch.
Yours in Rotary,
Jackie
At the July 15, 2021,Board of Directors meeting it was agreed that past presidents would fill the vacated President’s position.

March is Water and Sanitation Month
Clean water, sanitation, and hygiene education are basic necessities for a healthy environment and a productive life.
When people have access to clean water and sanitation, waterborne diseases decrease, children stay healthier and attend school more regularly, and mothers can spend less time carrying water and more time helping their families.
How Rotary makes help happen
Through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, Rotary’s people of action mobilize resources, form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that yield long-term change.

District 5110 Rotarians: Many have requested additional information regarding Rotary's response to the humanitarian crisis occurring in Ukraine.
The following was received:
Message from Rotary International: Rotary International is in contact with ShelterBox, our project partner for disaster response that provides emergency shelter and essential supplies. We are also in contact with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees - USA to prepare and respond to the needs of those being displaced in Ukraine and to neighboring countries. We will advise how individuals can provide humanitarian relief to the people of Ukraine as soon as we know the greatest needs and understand the best way to provide our assistance.
Message from ShelterBox: ShelterBox is responding to the Ukraine crisis and sending a team to eastern Europe. We are working to understand the type of emergency shelter people fleeing Ukraine need, if our aid will be suitable, and which locations we might be able to work in. We are coordinating with local authorities, Rotary, and other aid organizations to make sure as many people as possible will receive the help they need. ShelterBox is currently responding to 10 humanitarian crises worldwide. At this time, we need all the help we can get. https://www.shelterboxusa.org/hero Any money raised above the cost to provide ShelterBox aid to the Ukraine crisis will help ShelterBox provide emergency shelter in our other ongoing responses.

Wild polio case detected in Malawi
As an imported case from Pakistan, this detection of type 1 wild poliovirus in Malawi does not affect the WHO African region’s wild polio-free certification status.
The Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) has confirmed a case of type 1 wild poliovirus (WPV1) in a child suffering from paralysis in Malawi. Analysis has shown the virus is genetically linked to WPV1 that had circulated in Pakistan’s Sindh province.
Detection of WPV1 outside the world’s two remaining endemic countries of Pakistan and Afghanistan is a serious concern and underscores the importance of prioritizing polio immunization activities in countries such as Malawi to prevent future instances of importation.
While the news from Malawi is disappointing, the polio program has seen importations from endemic countries to regions that have been certified wild polio-free in the past, and has moved quickly to successfully stop transmission of the virus in these areas. Now is the time for all parties — Rotary members, communities, government leaders, and global partners — to recommit to ending all forms of polio for good. Read Rotary's full statement.
Progress in Pakistan shows that polio eradication remains achievable
Pakistan, one of the last two countries where polio is still endemic, has gone a full year without one report of a child being paralyzed by the wild poliovirus. This shows that a polio-free world is within reach. We recognize the commitment of Rotary members in Pakistan and around the world who have made this progress possible, and we continue to focus on the hard work we still need to do to deliver a polio-free future to all children everywhere.
Rotary members in Pakistan play a vital role in polio eradication by raising awareness and funds, advocating with government officials, and engaging community leaders. To date, Rotary has supported polio eradication in Pakistan by giving nearly US$347 million in grants to fund vaccines, immunization campaigns, and surveillance efforts, and to hire health workers. We’ve also established medical camps and water filtration plants to bring broader health improvements to communities.
Even as we reflect on our encouraging progress in Pakistan, we also recognize that it is fragile. Surveillance efforts in Pakistan have continued to detect the wild poliovirus in samples from the environment, and challenges in reaching all children with vaccines persist. Rotary and our partners must redouble our efforts to stop polio transmission.

April is Maternal and Child Health Month
Rotary makes high-quality health care available to vulnerable mothers and children so they can live longer and grow stronger.
We expand access to quality care, so mothers and children everywhere can have the same opportunities for a healthy future. An estimated 5.9 million children under the age of five die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation — all of which can be prevented.
How Rotary makes help happen
Rotary provides education, immunizations, birth kits, and mobile health clinics. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.
Rotary makes amazing things happen, like:
Mobile prenatal clinics
Haiti has the highest maternal and infant mortality rate of any country in the western hemisphere. Rotary provided a fully equipped medical Jeep to volunteers and midwives to reach mothers and children in remote areas.
Cancer screening
Rotarians provided a mobile cancer screening unit and awareness trainings around Chennai, India, where there is a high mortality rate of women with breast and cervical cancer due to late diagnosis.
Preventing injuries and deaths
Rotary members launched a $3 million, five-year pilot to save lives of mothers and children during home deliveries in Nigeria. Since 2005, they’ve also repaired 1,500 obstetric fistulas — 500 more than their initial goal — restoring dignity and hope to vulnerable mothers.

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
Morning Rotary Friends! Thank you for joining us today for this week's eClub State of Jefferson Weekly Meeting.
Don't you just hate having to change your clocks an hour and back every spring and fall? It sure messes up the internal clock. Wait a minute, I'm in Arizona, I don't need to change my clocks! LOL! Yesterday, I was on the freeway to Surprise, AZ and the digital signs along the way said: "Arizona doesn't spring forward, they buckle up!" I thought that was kind of funny, but then they got a bit redundant over the miles.
I received a notice the other day informing me, and others, of the Quarterly District Grant Meeting. Unfortunately, I will be hooking up the trailer that morning, and heading North, so I will not be able to attend, but if any of you have the time, and would like to participate, please join the meeting. See "Announcements" for more information.
I also received from DG Gerry a "Call for Nominations":
His message included that District 5110 has a long history of outstanding leadership and volunteer commitment at the international, zone, district, and club levels. Each year, we have an opportunity to recognize individuals and clubs that distinguish themselves through their exemplary acts of Service Above Self.
Awards will take place this year in Corvallis on April 30, 2022, at the District 5110 Celebration Conference.
Nominations must be presented to Awards Committee Chair, District Secretary Beth Sheehan or District Governor Gerry Kosanovic no later than March 27, 2022.
The nominations can be made by identifying the nominee with an accompanying explanation, with examples, of why the candidate is a worthy recipient of the award.
I asked Kevin Martin to send this notification to all of you with the necessary attachments. If you don't receive the email from Kevin, then let me or Kevin know, and we'll make sure you get a copy.
As far as a report on the March 17th Board Meeting, that will need to wait until next week, then after that I will no longer have internet, unless I find an RV Park on the road that does. Please be patient with if you need an immediate response. Thanks for understanding.
In the meantime, enjoy this week's program.
Yours in Rotary,
Jackie

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
Morning Rotary Friends! Thank you for joining us today for this week's eClub State of Jefferson Weekly Meeting.
Just to let you all know, our District Governor, Gerry Kosanivic told me that he would like to set up a club meeting with all of the State of Jefferson e-Club members. He said that he would like to set it up some time during the week of the 27th of March, and that he would make it a ZOOM meeting and will send out an invite to all SoJ club members. So please watch for any updates from DG Gerry.
I am still on the road in Arizona, and all is going well with me and my pooch Wookie, but sometimes, I wish I didn't have to "wing it" on my own. For instance, yesterday, I went out to check the dials on my propane tanks. I'm barely 5'1", and getting the cover off was a struggle, but I finally got it wiggled off and saw that the dials were green, so I put the cover back on. The only things is I had no heat this morning, and my breakfast omelet wouldn't cook because the stove wouldn't ignite, so back out to that huge cumbersome propane cover I went, but this time my 6 foot plus neighbor was outside and assisted me with it. Low and behold the dial showed RED! Lesson number two this week: "Read the manual on the furnace before assuming it ran on electricity, and check the propane level weekly" and check to see if both valves are open on the propane tanks! Sometimes I feel like an idiot! Thank goodness for great neighbors that have been helping me out during my stay here and along the road.
On March 17th, the State of Jefferson eClub Board members are having their monthly Board meeting at 8:00 AM PCT. If you would like to attend the meeting, then please log in to the club's web page, and go to the Meeting Tab and scroll down to the meeting and simply follow the instructions on how to log in to the meeting.
Make sure to change your clocks this coming Sunday, March 13th to Day-light-Savings-Time.
Hope you enjoy this week's program.
Yours in Rotary,
Jackie

Through water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programs, Rotary’s people of action mobilize resources, form partnerships, and invest in infrastructure and training that yield long-term change.
The tragic situation in Ukraine continues to break our hearts. Members have asked for ways to assist - the following message from The Rotary Foundation establishes a solid pathway for donations with a prioritized Rotary International Disaster Response Fund. If you can support this effort to address this terrifically somber moment in human suffering, please do so:

As one of the world’s largest humanitarian organizations, Rotary has made peace the cornerstone of our global mission. We are deeply concerned about the Ukraine crisis and need your help.
Rotary is made up of people of action, especially in difficult times. In response to the deepening refugee crisis, The Rotary Foundation Trustees have decided to prioritize contributions made to the Disaster Response Fund until 30 April 2022 to support disaster response grants for districts affected by these events. These expedited disaster response grants can be used to supply water, food, medicine, shelter, and clothing.
Half a million people have fled Ukraine and are in dire need of emergency aid. The United Nations estimates that number of refugees could grow to as many as 5 million people displaced. Rotary clubs in Europe and around the world have stepped up their relief work, some working on the ground to help displaced families.
With your donation to our Disaster Response Fund, we can support communities and help rebuild lives during this tragic time. Click HERE to donate now.
Sincerely,
John Germ

PODCAST: What would you want if you were poor?
By Dan Smith
In our work as podcasters, we interview hundreds of people in many different situations. Sometimes you find a common need that transcends borders. Something very surprising.
If you were poor and had nothing, what would you want most? Emily Francona interviewed Frances Dixon from Adopt a Village in Guatemala.

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
Morning Rotary Friends! Thank you for joining us today for this week's eClub State of Jefferson Weekly Meeting.
Before last week's meeting, I thought I would be on the road heading north, but after seeing a recent picture of a pileup on I-80, I realized that the weather up in Oregon wasn't warming up as quickly as I thought. And, not wanting to drive up from Arizona through rain, ice, and snow, I thought it best to wait a while before attempting the trip pulling a 30-foot trailer home.
So, in the meantime, I made an appointment to do a wellness check-up, and after discussing my bothersome left hip, that has been giving me problems these last few years, I got an x-ray and saw an orthopedic MD. After reviewing my x-rays, he told me that it was not as bad as I thought. He then gave me a steroid shot in the left hip and recommended that I see a physical therapist to start strengthening the hips. Last Wednesday was my first PT session, and I now have three pages of exercises to do on a daily basis. The PT sessions are to continue twice a week until it's time for me to hook up the trailer and head North.
To update you on some current items regarding our eClub, to everyone's surprise, Tom DV Wolsey has decided to resign as PE for the next quarter and fiscal year. This came about after we had an online vote to tidy up three Articles in the new Bylaws with a majority approving the revisions. Tom, wanted to discuss it more, but once the board had made their decision, I went ahead and accepted the motion.
The Nominating Committee are now looking for a new President Elect (PE) ,a President-Nominee (PN), a PE for 2023-2024, and a Membership Chair to be filled.
Hope you enjoy this week's program, and I hope you enjoy "A Sense of a Goose"
Yours in Rotary,
Jackie
At the July 15, 2021,Board of Directors meeting it was agreed that past presidents would fill the vacated President’s position.
January, February, and March – Past President - Jackie Oakley
A Sense of a Goose
Next fall, when you see geese heading south for the winter, flying along in "V" formation, you might consider what science has discovered as to why they fly that way. As each bird flaps its wings, it creates uplift for the bird immediately following. By flying in "V" formation, the whole flock adds at least 71 percent greater flying range than if each bird flew on its own.
People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going more quickly and easily, because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.
When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of trying to go it alone and quickly gets back into formation to take advantage of the lifting power of the bird in front.
If we have as much sense as a goose, we will stay in formation with those people who are headed the same way we are.
When the head goose gets tired, it rotates back in the wing and another goose flies point.
It is sensible to take turns doing demanding jobs, whether with people or with geese flying south.
Geese honk from behind to encourage those up front to keep up their speed.
What messages do we give when we honk from behind?
Finally-and this is important-when a goose gets sick or is wounded by gunshot, and falls out of formation, two other geese fall out with that goose and follow it down to lend help and protection. They stay with the fallen goose until it is able to fly or until it dies; and only then do they launch out on their own, or with another formation to catch up with their group.
If we have the sense of a goose, we will stand by each other like that. ~ Author Unknown

I will continue to provide members with timely information regarding humanitarian assistance to the people of Ukraine as it becomes available.

February is Peace and Conflict Resolution Month
Today, over 70 million people are displaced as a result of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children.
We refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts.
Rotary creates environments of peace
As a humanitarian organization, peace is a cornerstone of our mission. We believe when people work to create peace in their communities, that change can have a global effect.
By carrying out service projects and supporting peace fellowships and scholarships, our members take action to address the underlying causes of conflict, including poverty, discrimination, ethnic tension, lack of access to education, and unequal distribution of resources.
Our commitment to peace building today answers new challenges: how we can make the greatest possible impact and how we can achieve our vision of lasting change. We are approaching the concept of peace with greater cohesion and inclusivity, broadening the scope of what we mean by peace building, and finding more ways for people to get involved.
Rotary creates environments where peace can happen.

Your gift to the Annual Fund helps Rotary clubs take action today to create positive change in communities at home and around the world. Your contributions help us strengthen peace efforts, provide clean water and sanitation, support education, grow local economies, save mothers and children, protect the environment and fight disease.
The Every Rotarian Every Year initiative asks every Rotarian to support The Rotary Foundation every year. In addition to contributing to the Annual Fund on a regular basis, members are encouraged to get involved in a Foundation project or program.
SHARE and District Designated Fund
Through the SHARE system, contributions to The Rotary Foundation are transformed into grants that fund local and international humanitarian projects, scholarships, and activities, such as vocational training teams. At the end of every Rotary year, contributions directed to the Annual Fund-SHARE from all Rotary clubs in the district are divided between the World Fund and the District Designated Fund (DDF), after 5% is deducted for operating expenses.
At the end of three years, your district can use the DDF to pay for Foundation, club, and district projects that your club and others in the district choose. Districts may use up to half of their DDF to fund district grants. The remaining DDF may be used for global grants or donated to PolioPlus, the Rotary Peace Centers, or another district.
District officers are encouraged to monitor their district’s DDF availability and activity by viewing the SHARE Contribution Detail Report and Available DDF by District Report via their My Rotary account.
Complete our online form. For questions about your DDF, email us at share.mailbox@rotary.org with questions.
World Fund
The World Fund provides the necessary funding for our highest priority activities around the globe. While 47.5% of SHARE-designated contributions are applied to the World Fund, you can also direct your entire gift to the fund. The Foundation uses the money to pay for grant and program opportunities available to all Rotary districts.
Recurring giving (Rotary Direct)
The Annual Fund is the primary source of funding for all Foundation activities. Support our efforts year round by making a recurring gift. You choose how often and how much you want to give—it's a simple and secure way to make a big impact.
A monthly, quarterly, or annual gift option is available for all online contributions. You can enroll at my.rotary.org/rotary-direct, return the completed Rotary Direct enrollment form or enroll by phone at +1-866-976-8279.
To update your existing recurring giving contributions, sign in to My Rotary and choose Profile to access Donor Self-Service. Alternatively, email rotarydirect@rotary.org or call +1-866-976-8279. For security reasons, changes to your credit card information should be made by yourself online or by phone. Please do not send changes by mail or email.
Support a specific cause
You can direct your Annual Fund contributions to SHARE, the World Fund, or one of Rotary's areas of focus, and all contributions are spent wisely on quality Rotary projects.
Annual Fund contributions that are directed to the Foundation's areas of focus are credited toward a club's annual giving goal and per capital giving calculations. However, they are not included in a district's SHARE calculation and do not increase the amount of your District Designated Fund.
Donor recognition
All Annual Fund contributions count toward the following recognition opportunities:
- Every Rotarian Every Year
- Rotary Foundation Sustaining Member
- Paul Harris Fellow
- Paul Harris Society
- Major Donor
- Arch Klumph Society
Resources & reference
- The Rotary Foundation Contribution Form

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
Morning Rotary Friends! Thank you for joining us today for this week's eClub State of Jefferson Weekly Meeting.
After many months of no service projects to work on, John Allman updated the Board members during the January Board meeting on the Navajo Solar Lights Project which we have not been able to participate in because of the COVID pandemic. John reported that he had a new service project that would also work in conjunction with the Navajo Solar Lights Project. He reported that the Navajo Nation's children are needing books to read during the ongoing pandemic, and that the Durango Rotary Club is trying to help by providing a book mobile to provide the needed books. He also informed the Board that an allocated parcel of land has been obtained on the Reserve, and empty containers were installed to provide necessary utilities, for example a library, a bike shop, and other services.
This new project is called Chin Le Plants Hope Chapter, and is a 501(d)3 organization, and that it is a community-based project. In conjunction to the book mobile, this will also provide help identifying Navajo resident's that are in need of solar light kits, and to train younger Navajos how to install the solar lights.
Needless to say, the eClub Board members were very excited about this new project, and plan to continue to discuss it in more detail during the next board meeting, which will be occur on February 17, 2022 at 8AM PCT. If you would like to participate in this project, please contact John Allman, or any board member.
Hope you enjoy this week's program.

A project, to be successful requires a “champion,” someone to take responsibility and ensure that the project is completed. The eClub has had several service champions. We need your help. If you have a service project, you would like to champion, please contact Past President John Allman.
Projects that request District Matching Grant funds need to be submitted to the District before June 1st. If there are two or more projects the projects need to be defined as High, Medium, or Low priority and are funded in that order

All Annual Fund contributions count toward the following recognition opportunities:

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
Morning Rotary Friends! Thank you for joining us today for this week's State of Jefferson Weekly Meeting.
Sorry I haven't contributed my own updates since starting my quarter as president, but I have been traveling around for the last few months and managed to have some type of internet wherever I was staying, but once I arrived in Mesa with my trailer at a 55 and older RV/Golf Park, I found getting internet has been a problem. It took over 3 weeks to get it hooked up, and now that I have it, I have lots to catch up on.
I would like to thank Bruce Garrett for filling in for me these past few weeks, and I really appreciate what he posted for me last week, especially the story about "Whose Job Is It Anyway?", which is ironic, in that a group of us met a week or so ago on ZOOM (I was the one on the phone) with PDG Cindi to discuss future visioning for our club, and the discussion came up about the ongoing problem we have to get our members involved in participating in as Board Members and Directors.
Not to bore you with my past, but when I was invited to join this club, I said to myself, "If I am going to join this club, then I am going to participate, not only by attending the weekly meetings, but also get involved". I think I had been a member for about 6 months when I was asked if I would be interested in being Treasurer, and I said, "Yes!" Not only did I get the club's books on QuickBooks, which made it easier to track membership dues, and other items, but it made it easier in sending out annual Dues Invoices.
After my three years as Treasurer, I was asked if I would be interested in being President for a year, so I said, "Yes!" During my term as President, I assisted John Cox in his role as Treasurer, and filled in for the next Treasurer after his term was up. I also took on the role as Foundation Treasure after my term as President was over, something I have been doing now for over four years, because the person that was to take over as Foundation Treasurer is not well, and low and behold, nobody wants to take over the position, which is a very easy job!
This article that Bruce posted last week in the President's Corner was an inspiration to me, but hopefully to you too. So, do not be surprised if a Board member or someone from the Membership Committee contacts you to step up to the plate, and volunteer to be a Board or Director member.
Just to remind you of the story Bruce posted last week, I have attached it to this message:
Whose Job Is It, Anyway?”
This is a story about four people named Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There was an important job to be done and Everybody was sure that Somebody would do it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did it. Somebody got angry about that, because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn’t do it. It ended up that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have.
WW
Please welcome our newest member Jonathan Bilden! Johnathan is from the Crater Lake Academy, and his membership was approved at the January Board Meeting. Welcome Jonathan!
Hope you enjoy this week's program, and thank you again Bruce for making our weekly meetings so entertaining!
At the July 15 Board of Directors meeting it was agreed that past presidents would fill the vacated President’s position.

SoJ Board Meeting
Thu, Feb 17, 2022
8:00 AM - 9:30 AM (PST)
