Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of Jefferson. I am Bob Gibson.
I am taking this opportunity to share my view of Rotary. My definition of success is the opportunity to serve. This is why, since I was invited to join Rotary in 1979, it has been so important to me. Rotary has been structured to provide us with a wide array of tools that we can use to do good things.
Describing Rotary, I use the metaphor of a house. There are many rooms in this house. You can select the room in which you want to spend time, depending on your interests and passions. One wing of the house has rooms for a wide range of environmental projects. Another wing has rooms related to world health issues. A large room in this wing is devoted to the eradication of polio. Part of the house has rooms designed to encourage work with youth. This house, in my mind’s eye, is massive and has a wide array of opportunities for service.
Through years of experience, with both success and failure, Rotary has developed a comprehensive system and process for leveraging fiscal resources with volunteer, professional, and vocational resources to do good work in an exhaustive range of areas. Our membership once allowed limited numbers of Rotarians in each classification. This was done to ensure that we had representation across the vocational spectrum of the community. This has transitioned into a more inclusive approach. That said, we still try to achieve the broad scope of vocational representation.
My challenge to our membership is this. As you go about your daily business, when an idea for service crosses your path, consider if Rotary can help you make it reality. I have found that the successful Rotary projects come from someone with an insight, interest, and passion that personally champion the idea. There is a room in this “House of Rotary” for your idea.
Again, this is Foundation Month. Please consider being a Sustaining Member by supporting The Rotary Foundation with a $100 contribution each year. Our contributions put us shoulder to shoulder with those volunteers in the field providing the hands-on work. I am proud of The Rotary Foundation, and proud to be a Rotarian.
As you are aware, Past President Jean, Past President Jackie, President Elect DeVere, and I are sharing the duties this year. While not routine, it is a great example of how Rotary can adapt to changes and challenges.
If you have any questions or comments, I am available. My e-mail address is: bob@bluewaterphoto.net.
Enjoy the meeting.
At the July 15 Board of Directors meeting it was agreed that past presidents would fill the vacated President’s position.

Voices of Rotary -- Interact Virtual Tutoring Program Podcast
By Daniel Smith
Picture this; a student is trying to study at the kitchen table at home – Mom’s making dinner, rattling pots and pans, and baby brother is screaming because his diaper needs changed. Mayhem. Not a good environment for learning. Some students were barely scraping by. In comes the tutor, who not only saves the day academically, but also forms a friendship and bond with the student.
This is the story of how one District 5110 Interact club took the challenges of the pandemic and created a program that is being duplicated in the U.S. and Canada. Christine Waugh, Past President of the Eugene Southtowne Rotary Club, meets with the tutors, students and parents to find out how they built such a successful program. The great thing about Voices of Rotary storytelling is you don’t need anything special. No secret handshake, high tech devices or private registration. Click on the link, put your feet up, close your eyes and listen at https://voicesofrotary.org/.
But if you want to take the story with you and listen anywhere, that’s where podcasting comes in. We are adding new channels everyday so let us know your favorite and we will add it. Contact us at team@voicesofrotary.org

Editor’s Note:
Veterans Day, November 11th, is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served. This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service. November 11 is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. In 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in recognition for all veterans in all wars. This year there are around 19 million U.S. veterans representing less than 10% of the total U.S. adult population.
There are two articles in this week’s program; the first is an extremely graphic story of trials that for some were worse than death, and the second, a story offering hope. These men and women’s gave their lives so we could live our lives today.

November, in the Rotary world, is the month we recognize the significance of The Rotary Foundation. The Rotary Foundation (TRF) provides the fuel for our projects that provide service around the globe. The idea for the Foundation began with Arch Klumph in 1917. His motivation was to “do good in the world.” The initial contribution was $26.50. It is held in the highest esteem, with a four-star rating, the highest designation from Charity Navigator. Ninety-one percent of the Foundation funds are spent on program awards and operations. The structure and operation of TRF has been a reflection of Rotary International. The awarding of grants and promotion of projects has evolved over the years to remain relevant, efficient, and effective.

Welcome to this week’s meeting of the eClub of the State of Jefferson.
This week I would like to call your attention to polio eradication. Polio eradication has been a major initiative for Rotary International. Since our first vaccination program in the Philippines in 1979, the polio cases have been reduced by 99.9%. Currently, the only two countries in which polio is endemic are Afghanistan and Pakistan. We knew the last bit of this campaign would be challenging. Rotary International has developed strong partnerships with the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the CDC. If we don’t finish the job, the disease will reemerge worldwide. According to the RI website, if all work stopped, in ten years 200,000 children could be paralyzed by polio annually.
Our contributions to The Rotary Foundation and PolioPlus put us shoulder to shoulder with the volunteers working in the field. A child can be fully protected from polio for $3.00. What an investment. Please consider supporting this effort.

In an effort to enhance the security of passwords and protect Rotary Member data, DACdb is requiring users to reset their passwords. Therefore the next time you log in, you will be required to reset your password.
What Is Required?
When you reset your password, your new password (or passphrase) will require the following:
- minimum length of 12 characters long;
- contain at least one uppercase letter;
- contain at least one lowercase letter;
- contain at least one numeric character;
- contain at least one symbol (special character);
Why Is This Necessary?
As the internet continues to have many bad actors trying to hack into systems, DACdb wants to be sure that all Rotary Member personal data is protected with the current minimal password standards recommended. The minimum 12 character length requirement greatly increases the strength of the password when compared to 8-9 character length passwords. DACdb is implementing a new procedure to periodically require all users to update their passwords.
How Will I Remember My New Password?
All modern browsers allow users to quickly, easily and securely store passwords.You only have to enter your password one time correctly - then save. And you don't have to worry about it (until it is time to reset it again). There are also third-party password management tools available. You can use your favorite search engine to find a tool that works for you. Here is a sample search on the topic: Link
How Do I Reset My Password?
The next time you login, you will be prompted to change your password.
In the future, should you need to reset your password, you can do so from the login screen. You enter your login name and an email will be sent to you prompting you to enter a new password.
Storytelling Made Easy: Voices of Rotary
By Dan Smith
Want to hear a good story? Who doesn’t? Storytelling is said to be one of humankind’s most satisfying rites. “US News and Reports,” said that “The old-fashioned art of storytelling has become a 21st-century sensation.” Now Rotarians can listen to great stories with the District 5110 Voices of Rotary podcasts.

The varied podcast stories highlight matters of interest to just about everyone but especially Rotarians. For example, you can listen to a gripping account of Rotary’s response to the destructive Almeda Fire in Southern Oregon in 2020. It’s a great story--click here for more info and all the great people working behind the scenes on this Rotary podcast effort.
Voices of Rotary will entertain, instruct, enlighten, and expand your understanding of individual contributions of service in our communities. Check it out, access Voices of Rotary at https://youtu.be/fZgwCSc3NtY For more information or ways in which you can contribute your story, contact: Dan Smith dan@dewaga.com

We celebrated World Polio Day (Week or even Month) on Oct. 24th, I have some great news from Afghanistan and some very interesting facts
The UN has announced a nationwide polio immunization campaign in Afghanistan for the first time in many years.
- UNICEF said they had the full support of the Taliban for the project.
- The Taliban will also allow female staff on the campaign and provide security to the teams.
- UNICEF said the house-to-house immunization campaign beginning on 8 November would aim to reach nearly 10 million Afghan children under the age of five. The campaign would be the first in over three years to reach all children in Afghanistan, including more than 3.3 million children in some parts of the country who have previously remained inaccessible to vaccination campaigns, the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF said in a statement.
- "This decision will allow us to make a giant stride in the efforts to eradicate polio. To eliminate polio completely, every child in every household across Afghanistan must be vaccinated," Hervé Ludovic de Lys, UNICEF representative in Afghanistan, said.
- The UN said it had also agreed to a second polio vaccination campaign coordinating with a similar project being planned in neighboring Pakistan.
- There is no cure, but the polio vaccine protects children for life.

October 24 was World Polio Day. Here are some interesting facts.
These numbers show the progress we have made against polio over the years since 1985 when Rotary took on the challenge of eradicating polio in the world:
- Nearly 3 billion children have been vaccinated against polio.
- 19.4 million people who otherwise would have been paralyzed by polio can walk today.
- 1.5 million childhood deaths have been prevented by the GPEI’s delivery of vitamin A — a nutrient that is essential for healthy growth and development — to children during polio immunization campaigns.
- Cases of polio caused by wild poliovirus have been reduced by more than 99.9%.
- The number of countries that report cases of polio caused by the wild virus has been reduced from 125 to two.
- Rotary has invested more than US$2.2 billion in global polio eradication efforts.
- Rotary has also helped secure an additional $10 billion in donations for global polio eradication efforts from governments.
- 122 countries have received support from PolioPlus grants.
- If polio eradication efforts stopped now, within 10 years, 200,000 children could be paralyzed every year.

EVERYONE BOUGHT IN
2 years before a polio vaccine was developed in 1955, the US reported 35,000 polio cases in 1953. The most recent polio case in the US was reported in 1979 or 42 years ago (source: CDC).
